【井上萬二】
「白磁は形が最高の美であります。絵付けは必要ない。最高の美人に化粧はいらないでしょう？」その言葉に、萬二の美意識のすべてが凝縮されています。ロクロが生み出す純粋な「形」だけで美を語る。それが萬二の信念であり、生涯をかけて追い続けた問いでした。

1929年、有田に生まれ、初代奥川忠右衛門との出会いが生涯の方向を決定付けました。機械化・型成形が陶磁器生産の主流となった時代にあっても、萬二はロクロを手放しませんでした。「ロクロ成形は、土と技術と親しみ、人間の感情を土に表わすものです」——ロクロとは土と人間が格闘する場であり、そこにしか生まれない美があると信じていました。伝統を継ぎ、後進を導くことは「私たちの義務」であると言葉を残しています。素晴らしい作品には雑念が無い「名陶無雑」を座右の銘に、心技一体でロクロに向かい続けた人生でした。 1995年、重要無形文化財「白磁」保持者（人間国宝）認定。2025年7月、96歳で逝去。

【Manji Inoue】
"For white porcelain, the form itself is the ultimate beauty. Decoration is unnecessary. After all, a perfect beauty needs no makeup, does she?" This single sentiment encapsulates Manji Inoue’s entire aesthetic philosophy. To express beauty solely through the pure "form" birthed by the potter’s wheel—this was Manji’s conviction and the lifelong pursuit that defined his journey.
Born in Arita in 1929, his encounter with the first Chūemon Okugawa proved to be the turning point of his life. Even as mechanization and mold-casting became the mainstream methods of ceramic production, Manji refused to let go of the wheel. "Wheel-throwing is about communing with the clay and the craft; it is the act of expressing human emotion through the earth," he once said. He believed the potter’s wheel was a site of struggle between man and clay, and that it was the only place where true beauty could be born.
He often remarked that it was "our duty" to preserve tradition and guide the next generation. Guided by his personal motto, Meitō Muzatsu—the idea that a truly magnificent piece of porcelain is free of all distraction and impurity—he dedicated his life to the wheel, harmonizing mind and technique as one.
In 1995, he was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Substantive Cultural Property) for his mastery of white porcelain (Hakuji). In July 2025, he passed away at the age of 96.

【特上陶土について】
井上萬二の白磁には、熊本県天草陶石を原料とした特上陶土を使用しています。
天草陶石は、それ単体で磁器の原料となる、世界でも稀な石です。他の産地では複数の原料を調合して陶土を作りますが、天草陶石は余分なものを足すのではなく、余分なものだけを取り除くことによって、自らの純粋さを現します。特上陶土は化学処理を一切加えず、熟練の職人が手磨きで選び抜いた原石のみを使います。

鉄分・チタンの含有量が極めて少ないため、澄んだ白が生まれます。江戸時代の博学者・平賀源内が「天下無双の上品」と称えたこの土が、井上萬二の白を支えています。

【The Premium Porcelain Clay】
Manji Inoue’s white porcelain is crafted from the highest grade of Amakusa pottery stone, sourced from Kumamoto Prefecture. Amakusa stone is a rare geological wonder; unlike other regions where multiple materials must be blended, this stone stands alone as a complete raw material. Rather than adding ingredients, the process is one of subtraction—removing impurities to reveal the stone's inherent purity.

This premium clay is never chemically treated. Instead, skilled artisans hand-select and polish only the finest raw stones. Because it contains trace amounts of iron and titanium, it produces an exceptionally clear, brilliant white. This legendary material, praised by the Edo-period scholar Hiraga Gennai as "unrivaled under heaven," is the foundation of Manji Inoue’s signature white.
