In 1995, he was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Substantive Cultural Property) for his mastery of white porcelain (Hakuji). Amakusa stone is a rare geological wonder; unlike other regions where multiple materials must be blended, this stone stands alone as a complete raw material. Rather than adding ingredients, the process is one of subtraction—removing impurities to reveal the stone's inherent purity. This premium clay is never chemically treated. Instead, skilled artisans hand-select and polish only the finest raw stones. Because it contains trace amounts of iron and titanium, it produces an exceptionally clear, brilliant white. This legendary material, praised by the Edo-period scholar Hiraga Gennai as "unrivaled under heaven," is the foundation of Manji Inoue’s signature white.
